The purpose of accreditation of nuclear medicine (NM) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging departments is to set quality standards and help improve the quality of patient care. Accreditation is a process that can be required for reimbursement of diagnostic imaging procedures. The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL) have both developed quality standards that must be met for accreditation. Accreditation is accomplished through peer review and the evaluation of staff qualifications, equipment, quality control, and quality assurance programs, as well as image quality. This program will discuss the two different accreditation bodies and an overview of the process for accreditation.
