Computed tomography (CT) scanners have become more complex, procedures have become more sophisticated, data sets have become extraordinarily large, and ionizing radiation doses necessary to produce quality examinations continue to be questioned. Current research and information pursuant to safe performance of CT examinations for all age groups are the primary presentation points in this program. We discuss ionizing radiation dose as it applies to computed tomography, look at somatic effects, offer recommendations for better diagnostic performance, and offer suggestions for safer use of CT systems.
